Cubic Feet to Square Feet Calculator

Convert cubic feet to square feet by dividing by the depth in feet. The default below assumes a 3-inch depth (0.25 ft) — change it to fit your project.

The math
ft² = ft³ ÷ depth (ft)
Square feet at 3 in deep
4
Coverage at 1″ deep
12 ft²
Coverage at 2″ deep
6 ft²
Coverage at 6″ deep
2 ft²
Coverage at 12″ deep
1 ft²

At a different depth, divide ft³ by the depth in feet (1″ = 0.083 ft, 2″ = 0.167 ft, 6″ = 0.5 ft, 12″ = 1 ft).

How to convert cubic feet to square feet

Square feet measures flat area; cubic feet measures volume. To convert between them you must specify a third dimension — depth or height. The relationship is ft² = ft³ ÷ depth (in feet).

ft² = ft³ ÷ depth (ft)

Worked examples

Example 1: 50 ft³ of mulch at 3 inches deep

50 ÷ 0.25 = 200 ft² of coverage.

Example 2: 100 ft³ of topsoil at 6 inches deep

100 ÷ 0.5 = 200 ft² of coverage.

Example 3: 1 yd³ (27 ft³) of gravel at 2 inches deep

27 ÷ 0.167 ≈ 162 ft² of coverage.

1 inch deep (0.083 ft)÷ 0.08312 ft² per ft³
2 inches deep (0.167 ft)÷ 0.1676 ft² per ft³
3 inches deep (0.25 ft)÷ 0.254 ft² per ft³
6 inches deep (0.5 ft)÷ 0.52 ft² per ft³
12 inches deep (1 ft)÷ 11 ft² per ft³

Common uses

  • Mulch coverage planning (3 inches deep is standard)
  • Topsoil and lawn-leveling spreading
  • Gravel driveway depth calculations
  • Concrete slab area for a fixed pour volume

Where this conversion comes up

Going from a volume back to a coverage area is essential for any layered material — mulch, soil, gravel, or concrete spread to a known depth.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing area with volume. Square feet measures a flat surface; cubic feet measures three-dimensional space. You cannot “convert” between them without a depth.
  • Forgetting to specify the depth in feet. If you want square feet of coverage from a cubic feet volume, divide by depth — but the depth must be in feet, not inches.
  • Treating “square” and “cubic” as interchangeable. Square feet (ft²) is area; cubic feet (ft³) is volume. Misreading the unit on a spec sheet causes the most common errors.

Expert tips

  1. Divide cubic feet by depth (in feet) to get square feet of coverage. If you have 25 ft³ of mulch and want to spread it 3 inches (0.25 ft) deep, the coverage is 25 ÷ 0.25 = 100 ft².
  2. For depth in inches, divide by depth÷12. Or equivalently: ft³ × 12 ÷ depth-in-inches = ft² of coverage.
  3. For mulch, soil, and gravel, this is the most common workflow. Most landscape orders go: square feet of bed × depth = cubic feet to order. See the mulch, soil, and gravel calculators.
  4. For concrete pads, use a 4-inch (0.333 ft) standard. Most residential slabs are 4 inches thick. So 1 ft³ of concrete covers 3 ft² of slab. See the concrete calculator.
