How to calculate cubic feet for microwave
Microwave capacity is the most commonly compared spec when shopping. To verify a published rating or measure a custom built-in microwave, measure interior length × width × height in inches and divide by 1,728.
Worked examples
Example 1: A 16 × 11 × 9 inch countertop microwave
16 × 11 × 9 = 1,584 in³ ÷ 1,728 ≈ 0.92 ft³.
Example 2: A 19 × 14 × 11 inch family-size microwave
19 × 14 × 11 = 2,926 in³ ÷ 1,728 ≈ 1.69 ft³.
Example 3: A 12 × 9 × 8 inch mini microwave
12 × 9 × 8 = 864 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 0.5 ft³.

Tips and considerations
Match wattage to volume
Below 1.0 ft³ models typically draw 700 W; mid-size run 900–1,000 W; full-size 1,100–1,200 W. More power = faster cooking.
Check turntable diameter
Cubic feet alone doesn\'t guarantee plate clearance. Look for at least 12 inch turntable diameter for full-size dinner plates.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring cabinet outside vs cavity inside. A “1.5 ft³” rating is the cooking cavity. The outside cabinet is significantly larger.
- Confusing turntable diameter with usable depth. A 12-inch turntable does not mean 12 inches of usable depth — the cavity is usually 10–11 inches deep.
- Comparing wattage to cubic feet directly. Higher wattage means faster cooking, not more capacity. Both ratings matter, but they measure different things.
- Forgetting countertop clearance. The exterior dimensions tell you whether it fits the counter; the interior tells you whether your dish fits inside.
