How to calculate cubic feet for refrigerator
Refrigerator capacity is published in cubic feet, but manufacturers don't always agree on what "cubic feet" means — some include the freezer, some report only the refrigerator section, and most exclude shelf and drawer thickness. To verify the spec or measure a custom built-in, use interior inch dimensions and divide by 1,728.
cubic feet = (L × W × H in inches) ÷ 1,728
Worked examples
Example 1: A 28 × 28 × 60 inch fridge interior
28 × 28 × 60 = 47,040 in³ ÷ 1,728 ≈ 27.2 ft³.
Example 2: A compact dorm fridge, 17 × 17 × 28 inches
17 × 17 × 28 = 8,092 in³ ÷ 1,728 ≈ 4.68 ft³.
Example 3: A 22 × 22 × 50 inch counter-depth fridge
22 × 22 × 50 = 24,200 in³ ÷ 1,728 ≈ 14.0 ft³.
Common refrigerator sizes
| Style | Conversion factor | Worked example |
|---|---|---|
| Compact / mini fridge | 4–8 ft³ | Dorm room, office |
| Top-freezer (small) | 14–18 ft³ | Apartments, couples |
| Top-freezer (standard) | 18–22 ft³ | Families of 3–4 |
| Counter-depth | 17–23 ft³ | Modern kitchens |
| French door | 22–28 ft³ | Families of 4+ |
| Side-by-side | 20–28 ft³ | Families of 4+ |
| Built-in (large) | 28–40 ft³ | High-end kitchens |
Tips and considerations
Subtract drawers and shelves
Crisper drawers, deli bins, and ice makers eat about 15–25% of total interior cubic feet. The "usable" capacity is roughly 75–85% of the gross figure.
Match capacity to household size
Industry rule of thumb: 4–6 ft³ per adult plus 2 ft³ per additional person. Add 4 ft³ if you entertain or bulk shop frequently.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring outside dimensions. Refrigerator capacity is interior volume. Outside is what fits in your kitchen; inside is what holds food.
- Forgetting to subtract for shelves and drawers. Manufacturer ratings include the full cabinet volume, but some shelves and drawers reduce actual usable space.
- Mixing total capacity with fridge-only or freezer-only. A “25 ft³” fridge usually means 18 ft³ refrigerator + 7 ft³ freezer. Read the spec sheet carefully.
- Using cubic inches without converting. Fridge interiors are measured in inches, but capacity is quoted in cubic feet. Divide by 1,728.
