How to calculate cubic feet for freezer
Freezer capacity is published in cubic feet, calculated as interior length × width × height divided by 1,728 (the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot). For an irregular shape, segment the interior into rectangles and sum the volumes.
cubic feet = (L × W × H in inches) ÷ 1,728
Worked examples
Example 1: A 36 × 24 × 30 inch chest freezer interior
36 × 24 × 30 = 25,920 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 15 ft³.
Example 2: A 24 × 24 × 50 inch upright freezer interior
24 × 24 × 50 = 28,800 in³ ÷ 1,728 ≈ 16.67 ft³.
Example 3: A small 18 × 18 × 30 inch standalone freezer
18 × 18 × 30 = 9,720 in³ ÷ 1,728 ≈ 5.63 ft³.
Common freezer sizes
| Style | Conversion factor | Worked example |
|---|---|---|
| Compact upright | 3–5 ft³ | Apartments, dorms |
| Small chest | 5–9 ft³ | Couples, small families |
| Mid-size chest | 10–15 ft³ | Families of 3–4 |
| Large chest | 16–25 ft³ | Bulk buyers, hunters |
| Mid-size upright | 13–18 ft³ | Garages, basements |
| Large upright | 20–25 ft³ | Commercial home use |
Tips and considerations
Account for baskets
Lift-out baskets and dividers reduce usable volume 5–10% from total cubic feet.
Match to your buying habits
Plan 5–7 ft³ per person for serious bulk meat or batch-cooking households; 1.5 ft³ per person for normal use.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing chest and upright capacity ratings. A “7 ft³ chest” and a “7 ft³ upright” have the same total volume but very different usable space — uprights have shelves; chests are open bins.
- Ignoring the freezer's inner liner. Outside dimensions include 2–4 inches of insulation. Interior cubic feet is what matters for what you can store.
- Forgetting weight of frozen food. Frozen foods average about 35 lb/ft³. A 15 ft³ freezer full holds about 525 pounds — relevant for moving and floor loading.
- Sizing for current inventory only. Freezers do not shrink. Plan for peak load — holiday cooking, harvest, or hunt season.
