Storage Unit Cubic Feet Calculator

Calculate the cubic feet of any storage unit and match it to standard sizes. Includes a what-fits guide for 5×5 through 10×30 units.

Standard ceiling height
Storage facilities use 8 ft ceilings unless stated. Climate-controlled and high-end units often have 9–10 ft ceilings — ask if it matters.

How to calculate cubic feet for storage unit

Storage units are advertised by floor area (5×5, 10×10, 10×20) but priced and used by volume. Multiply the unit\'s length × width × ceiling height in feet to get cubic feet. Standard ceilings are 8 ft.

For your move-in plan, sum the cubic feet of your furniture and boxes (use the moving calculator for a quick estimate), then add 10–20% to leave aisle space for accessing items.

Worked examples

Example 1: A 5 × 5 ft unit with 8 ft ceiling

5 × 5 × 8 = 200 ft³ — about 25 medium boxes.

Example 2: A 10 × 10 ft unit with 8 ft ceiling

10 × 10 × 8 = 800 ft³ — contents of a 1–2 bedroom apartment.

Example 3: A 10 × 20 ft unit with 9 ft ceiling

10 × 20 × 9 = 1,800 ft³ — contents of a 3-bedroom home plus garage.

Tips and considerations

Plan for aisle access

Pack to about 80–85% of cubic feet, leaving a center aisle. Otherwise retrieving anything from the back means unloading the whole unit.

Climate vs ambient

Climate-controlled units cost 25–50% more but protect electronics, photos, leather, and wood from humidity and temperature swings. For 6+ months of storage in humid climates, it\'s worth the premium.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing square feet with cubic feet. A 10×10 unit is 100 ft² of floor — but vertical space matters. Most units have 8 ft ceilings, so usable cubic feet is 800.
  • Ignoring stacking efficiency. Boxes stack to about 75% of total cubic feet because of awkward shapes and access paths. Plan for 25% loss.
  • Forgetting climate control needs. Climate-controlled units cost more per cubic foot but matter for documents, electronics, and instruments.
  • Using the wrong unit-size guide. Online “5×10 holds a one-bedroom apartment” calculators are aggressive. A real 1-bedroom move usually needs 10×10 or larger.
